Homemade Pooper Scooper With Scraper
By Jo Soliday
You can easily make homemade pooper scoopers from large, old plastic containers such as chlorine or orange juice bottles. This could be a great project for a group of older kids. Scoops could be donated to the local dog park.

The best bottles have a handle, are not too wide (up to 8 inches or 205mm), and are made of thick, strong plastic. They're usually round or else rectangular with rounded edges.
Making these homemade pooper scoopers involves cutting through plastic. A serrated knife, carpet blade, or X-acto blade can be used. Use a strong pair of scissors to do the final trim on the edges.
Remember to keep body parts away from any cutting devices.
Instructions For The Scoop:
- Remove labels from the container with soap and water and/or by scraping
- Hold the bottle by its handle
- Use a marker to make a line all around the bottle about 1 inch (25mm) below the bottom of the handle
- Cut all along the line and remove the bottom of the bottle
- Save the bottom if you plan to make a scraper too
- Trim the edges with scissors, making sure the scooping edge is as smooth as possible
Instructions For The Scraper:
- Cut the bottom piece so one edge is straight
- Do not make it too small - you need room for fingers to hold the scraper without them getting contaminated
- Make a hole in the scraper and tie it to the handle with approximately 12 inches (300 mm) of twine
No need to rinse - just let the pooper scooper and scraper air dry in an out-of-the-way place between uses. You can store it in an unused bucket or a large old ice cream container or hang it on a wire loop. To Make The Wire Loop:
1. Take a wire coat hanger
2. Scrunch the main parts together
3. Twist this double end around a pole, post or branch OR
4. Hang it on a nail OR staple it to the above
5. Use the single hook end of the hanger for your scoop
You may wish to bend the end of the hook so there are no sharp edges
